Houston Methodist West Hospital, a state-of-the-art medical campus providing a full range of medical care across Katy and West Houston, Texas, is expanding to meet the needs of its community. The growing hospital campus offers more than 200 beds and access to innovative medical and surgical care.
Located on a beautifully landscaped 42-acre campus on Interstate 10 near Barker-Cypress, Houston Methodist West Hospital provides the Methodist Hospital System with a strong, visible presence in the West Houston-Katy corridor and an opportunity to meet the healthcare needs of this rapidly growing community. The $220-million campus initially included a six-story, 474,000-square-foot hospital, a six-story, 162,000-square-foot medical office building, a 13,000-square-foot central utility plant, and multiple water features and gardens.
A recent $65 million expansion project at Houston Methodist West Hospital included the construction of a 150,000-square-foot Medical Office Building 3 (MOB 3) with a design similar to MOB 2. The new hospital wing is comprised of 6 floors, 200 patient beds, and 1000 rooms. The expansion development also included a 15,000-square-foot Orthopedics and Sports Medicine clinic on Level 1 of the new MOB 3, a 294,000-square-foot, six-level structural precast parking garage (Garage B), and two enclosed pedestrian connection bridges. One of the pedestrian bridges connects the new Garage B to MOB 3 and the other bridge connects MOB 3 to the main hospital vestibule.
Navigating healthcare facilities can be very challenging due to their complexity. When an established hospital campus expands, it can cause additional confusion and stress for visitors, especially during construction. To minimize friction, FMG Design audited existing vehicular and pedestrian signage and modified the existing vehicular directional signs to provide effective directions to the new Medical Office Building 3 and Garage B for Phase 3.
FMG Design, working with Page Southerland Page architects, developed comprehensive campus-wide experiential graphics and an integrated wayfinding program for the site, exterior, interior, and garage parking. This included directional and regulatory graphics for both pedestrian and vehicular traffic and an ADA-compliant base-building interior graphics program for the Medical Office Building 3 and the Orthopedics and Sports Medicine department. In addition, FMG designed and implemented exterior graphics on relevant building facades to graphically identify the Medical Office Building 3, Garage B and the Orthopedics and Sports Medicine according to brand standards. All signage was fabricated by Hardman Signs.
