The Permian Basin Behavioral Health Center is a new, purpose-built behavioral health campus created to expand access to inpatient psychiatric treatment, crisis stabilization, and other behavioral health services for communities throughout West Texas. Developed through a collaborative effort between Midland Memorial Hospital and Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, the facility provides a supportive, healing environment for patients across a broad range of ages.
Working with HKS, FMG Design developed a comprehensive patient-safe experiential graphics and integrated wayfinding program for the Behavioral Health Center and adjacent Medical Office Building.
Color and image-coded wayfinding creates recognizable visual cues to help patients, families, visitors, and staff navigate the facility with greater clarity and confidence. The program extends beyond traditional signage to include large-scale supergraphics inspired by the parks and landscapes of Texas, colorful painted feature walls that reinforce the wayfinding system, and a themed donor recognition wall celebrating the community support behind the project.
Donor Recognition
FMG also designed a themed donor recognition wall for the Medical Office Building, celebrating the individuals and organizations whose generosity helped make the new behavioral health campus possible. The custom feature integrates multiple levels of donor recognition into a cohesive graphic composition that complements the visual character of the overall experiential graphics program while keeping patient safety in mind.
Supergraphics / Wayfinding Graphics
For this project, we transformed the natural beauty of the state of Texas into an intuitive wayfinding system for the facility. Each wing was assigned a recognizable regional landmark—such as Balmorhea State Park, Big Bend National Park, and Carlsbad Caverns—paired with the architect’s established color palette. These destinations were woven into the room signage through imagery and color, giving each area a distinct identity while helping patients and visitors more easily recognize and navigate their surroundings.
